International Cooperation

WASME is the only international non-governmental organization of SMEs, enjoying Consultative or Observer status with:
  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
  • United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO)
  • World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)
  • World Customs Organisation (WCO)
  • United Nations Development Program (UNDP)
  • United Nations Commission on International Trade Laws (UNCITRAL) (WCO)
  • United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)

WASME is entitled to send its representatives to attend all concerned meetings of these organizations as well as those of regional commissions and various Expert Group Meetings, Symposia etc. convened by these agencies. This enables its member institutions to have access not only to valuable documentation but also to express their considered views on behalf of WASME on issues of concern to SMEs and to interact with top policy makers and specialists in their areas of specialization.

WASME has entered into a protocol of cooperation with United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and International Trade Centre (ITC). This protocol grants WASME “Operational Relationship” with these organizations. WASME also maintains close working relationship with Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD); and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) as well as several international non-governmental organsiations such as International Network for Small and Medium Enterprises (INSME), International Council of Small Business (ICSB),Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) and International Association of Crafts, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. It also finds place in International labour organisation (ILO)’s special list of non-governmental international organisation. Permanent Representatives of WASME are in constant touch with UN Agencies and other International Organisations dealing with SMEs. WASME also has a number of Senior Advisors in member countries. These Advisors are experts with long years of experience and international exposure in their respective field of specialisation.

WASME has also been working closely with the United Nations regional Economic Commissions for Asia, Africa, Europe, West Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean countries. It also interacts with regional banks like Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, Inter-America Development Bank and also with Asian Productivity Organisations, etc. WASME has worldwide linkages through a large number of focal points. These focal points include computerised networks such as BRE, technology transfer centres, chambers of commerce and industries and associations of SMEs and development financial institutions globally working for SMEs, artisans, craftsmen and women entrepreneurs.
