Early Years(1980-2000)

WASME was founded in New Delhi, India in 1980 as a result of the recommendation of the first ever World Conference of Small and Medium Enterprises in New Delhi in November 1980 which was participated by about 600 representatives of the world SME community.

Initially, the organization was registered as Non-Profit Organisation in India under Society Registration Act 1860, Ministry Corporate Affairs, Government of India named as “World Assembly of Small and Medium Enterprises (WASME)”. Later realizing that the name was not reflecting the character and composition of the members of the society are generally engaged in promotion and development of MSMEs and not MSMEs themselves, the Governing Body of WASME decided to change the name to “World Association for Small and Medium Enterprises” with the same acronym “WASME”. Consequently, the society in the name “World Assembly of Small and Medium Enterprises” got amalgamated into “World Association for Small and Medium Enterprises” on 19th March 1993.

When WASME was established, there were very few UN agencies or international organizations whose main goal was to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Not even the majority of governments did so. MSMEs also faced significant challenges in getting access to accurate, dependable, and up-to-date information, and despite their significant economic contributions, there was a dearth of advocacy for their concerns in the right forums.

In that context, the main goals of WASME were to promote the efficient dissemination of high- quality, trustworthy information, draw attention to the important roles that MSMEs play in economies, persuade national governments, UN agencies, and international organizations to prioritize the advancement of MSMEs, and represent MSMEs' interests and concerns in a variety of national, regional, and global fora. It is well known that WASME accomplished this goal, and as a result of its exceptional efforts in this field, it has gained recognition as the voice of MSMEs around the globe.

With a robust mission to build a cohesive community of Micro, Small, And Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), take necessary action to strengthen them, and positively impact the overall global economy; since inception, WASME has made a substantial contribution, both in terms of operations and policy and has played a critical role in securing greater understanding and collaboration between organisations engaged in the MSME development at national, regional and international levels, as well as the representative associations of MSMEs in WASME member countries, and in bringing about significant policy changes concerning MSMEs in both developed and developing nations. WASME became the only international NGO that enjoys consultative/ observer status with many UN agencies such as ECOSOC, UNCTAD, ITC, WIPO, UNIDO, UNESCO, UNICITRAL, UNESCAP and ILO, several intergovernmental and international organizations like WCO, OECD, ICSB, APEC, APCTT, etc. to promote and support MSMEs around the world.

Over four decades of rigorous efforts and commitment, WASME has created world largest and cohesive community for the promotion and development of MSMEs in the world including UN agencies, national and international organizations, local government bodies, regional authorities, chamber of commerce and industries, industry associations, SME promotion agencies, financial institutions, research institutes, banks, civil societies and member representatives in over 100 countries to achieve sustainable Development of MSMEs. Still, WASME is emerging as a powerful international organization with representatives in different parts of the world that include Permanent Representatives, Senior Advisors, and External Consultants etc.
